REUSE
Reuse waste is the third R. Here are some practical tips for families to REUSE what we have bought so we can stop the amount of our waste that ends up in landfill.

1. Reuse boxes for art and craft activities (like LGB are doing).
2. Reuse old containers as storage for fishing bait.
3. Reuse plastic containers for chook feeders.
4. Give unwanted clothes to friends and family for them to reuse.
5. Give old t-shirts to mechanics for rags or make them into boomerang bags.
6. Reuse water bottles for daily drinking water.
7. Reuse plastic cups that are purchased elsewhere.
8. Reuse old books by giving them on to 2 nd hand book shops or friends.
9. Reuse carp for fish bait (not for human consumption).
10. Reuse paper to make coasters and placemats.
11. Reuse fruit and veggie containers for pot plants and X-Ray pots.

REDUCE waste is the second R.

Here are some practical tips for families to REDUCE the amount of waste they have or buy that will only end up in landfill.

  1. Buy less new things and have a yearly budget for clothes, toys and other items.
  2. Do a weekly menu and make a shopping list to avoid buying food that might be thrown out.
  3. Don’t buy anything that has too much plastic packaging.
  4. Take your own containers to the butchers or markets
  5. Buy in bulk - it saves you money too.
  6. Reduce food into landfill by bringing scraps to school for our chooks or give them to a neighbour who has chooks.
  7. Do less shopping.
  8. Turn off taps when not using water so you reduce the amount of water you waste..

REFUSE waste is the first R.

Here are some practical tips for families to help them REFUSE buying waste that will only end up in landfill.

  1. Take metal straws or keep cups to cafes.
  2. Refuse to buy small packs inside a bigger pack - Buy in bulk to reduce plastic and save money!
  3. Take your own shopping bags and refuse to buy plastic shopping bags that can’t be recycled anyway and will end up in our waterways.
  4. Refuse to buy any fruit and vegetables in plastic containers or bags.  Take your own produce bags.
  5. Buy products in cans/tins (dog food, soft drink or food)  where possible, as cans can be recycled back into new cans.
  6. Use wax wraps or reusable wraps instead of plastic wrap.

Hammers were out to add more coloured plastic to the Totem Poles

Lots of hammers were brought in on St Joseph the Worker Day, so students were very keen to use them to add lots more coloured plastic lids to our totem poles.  The totem poles are looking very colourful and we are reusing plastic lids that would normally go into landfill.  Keep saving all your coloured lids and send them into school as we have lots more room on our totem poles for extra colour.
