GET READY FOR PLASTIC FREE JULY 2019

28/6/2019

St Joe’s students are excited about going Plastic Free this July.  So they are challenging their families and the community to go Plastic Free starting Monday.

They have decided on the actions they will take to go
plastic free at home and worked out how they will help their family.  Look out for the Action Plan they’ve brought home to go on the fridge and a letter of support they have written for their family members.

GOOD LUCK WITH PLASTIC FREE JULY!

Bottle Tops for Hands Project - We need your help!

21/6/2019

Envision are aiming to collect 2,000,000 bottle tops, to recycle them into, mobility aids, Disability Aids and Aged Care gadgets.  Next to plastic bags, plastic bottle tops are one of the top polluters of the oceans and environment. They create micro beads which enter the food chain and pollute our beaches.
St Joe's is getting behind this great cause to collect as many bottle tops as we can.  Water Sprouts group (Jimmy, Thomas, Jensen and Pheobe) have set up a box in the Office.
So don’t throw your bottle tops away or put them into recycling. Bring them into sSt Joe's so Envision can turn them into prosthetic hands for children and adults in war torn countries.

Start collecting your bottle tops today and bring them into St Joe's.

The 6th R - RECYCLE

RECYCLE waste is the sixth R.  We need to RECYCLE wisely,  as throwing all recyclable items in the RECYCLE bin is not the best way to make sure recyclable items are really recycled.

Try these practical tips to ensure your recyclable waste doesn’t end up in landfill.

  1. Set up a REDCYCLE system (like we have at school), to recycle soft plastics.  Take them to COLES to be recycled.
  2. Empty plastic containers before you put them in the recycle bin.
  3. Don’t bag any items you put in the Recycle bin.
  4. Only recycle glass jars or bottles, not window glass or pyrex
  5. Recycle all your batteries at ALDI
  6. Take your E-Waste (anything with a cord) to the collection point at Coleraine Tip.
  7. Recycle all your Printer cartridges at Coleraine Post Office
  8. Recycle your Mobile phones at Coleraine Post Office
  9. Start collecting Bread bag tags for a recycle project next term.
  10. Start collecting Bottle Tops for our Bottle Tops for Hands project - see above post.

The 5th R - ROT

ROT  waste is the fifth R.  Here are some practical tips for families to ROT their food scraps and green and brown waste.

  1. Give chickens and animals leftover food and fruit and veggie scraps.  Share with neighbours if you don’t have animals.
  2. Bring your fruit and veggie scraps to the school chooks.
  3. Make a pile of leaves and it will turn into compost for your garden.
  4. Build a worm farm out of styrofoam boxes.  Get worms from the school worm farm instead of buying them!
  5. Build a Trench Compost area in your garden.  See our next blog post for how to do it.

Build a Trench Compost Area

14/6/2019

While we were researching our tips for composting for the 5th R ROT, we saw Costa's video about making a Compost Trench.  We liked it because you don't need an expensive compost bin and you don't need to move the compost once its ready.

Here's Costa's steps and a link to the video we watched.
Dig a trench about no more than 350mm deep; in a heavy clay soil make that 250mm. It can be as wide as you like, but two shovel widths is a good start. Retain the excavated soil.
  • Layer scraps and garden waste in the base of the trench, to a depth of about 200mm. Alternate dry leaves with wet scraps, the more diverse the ingredients the better.
  • To super charge your trench, sprinkle with a hand full each of lime and of rock dust per couple of metres.
  • Back fill with the retained soil.
  • The scraps will decompose over time, depending on the amount of oxygen and moisture below.
  • To improve the soil above the scraps, sow a green manure crop of broad beans
  • You can dig them back in as a green manure when they are shin high, or let them produce their delicious, nutritious seeds.
