We have entered the Wannon Water, “Grow It, Water It, Cook It” competition again this year.  Our recipe is the delicious Roasted zucchini, tomato, chilli, spinach and ricotta cake, we cooked last term, using our fresh of veggies from the garden.

WE MADE 55 RE-USABLE PRODUCE BAGS

22/8/2018

St Joey’s Hall was a hive of activity last Thursday, as parents, friends and students, cut, pinned, sewed and threaded reusable Produce Bags.  We made 55 reusable produce bags from pre-loved curtain material, an amazing sustainable effort! Some of the the bags will be sent home to our families and the rest will be for sale at the Twilight Fair.

Thanks to Shannyn McElgunn for organising the session and thanks to Jade Cunneen, Rhianna Paton, Kate Novikov, Nicole Tindall, Bec Small and Candice and Kim  for your great work. Thanks also to our students Grace, Hannah, Heston, William, Angus, Pheobe and Hunter who had great fun, taking photos, sewing, threading, cutting and pinning.  Thanks Benita Lambert for donating the thread.
Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it, we’ll be having another sewing session early in Term 4.

PRODUCE BAGS SEWING PROJECT WITH STUDENTS

7/8/2018

We are so proud of all the work our students have been doing in reducing plastic single use waste in our local community.  The students have invited parents to come along and help sew up some produce bags (small mesh drawstring bags to collecting fruit and vegetables in whilst shopping) using recycled curtains and mesh fabric.

The Parents’ Association in conjunction with the School Student Leadership Team will be setting up a sewing station on
Thursday 16th August at 12:30pm in the school hall.  Come along (and invite grandparents and friends too!) to help make these wonderful items.
Even if you can’t sew, we will need help cutting and pinning fabric. The students will love to show us how they work, and may even teach us some new skills!

What Were Your "Plastic Free July Achievements?

3/8/2018

The “Plastic Free July” campaign has finished, but we’ve had feedback from students and families about how they will continue the good habits they started in July to make their lives more “plastic free”.
Lots of families have used the boomerang bags our senior students made for the Coleraine IGA.  Some families have stopped buying individually wrapped muesli bars and are making their own, others are taking containers to the butchers and deli. And many students are bringing “nude food” to school every day.

Heston and his family have been making boomerang bags at home and Charlotte has made a phone cover from recycled socks and buttons, so she doesn’t have to buy a plastic one.  Amazing!
Why not share what you have been doing to go “plastic free” on the school’s Facebook page, so we can celebrate your achievements and keep the ball rolling.
