GROWING POTATOES FOR THE FAIR

30/10/2020

The Parent’s Association have asked if students could grow some produce for the Produce Stall at the Fair next March. We will grow summer veggies at school and are asking families if they can grow some veggies at home too. This week LGC and LGB students harvested lots of small potatoes that can be replanted now and will grow into a crop of large potatoes in time for the Fair. All the students took home a bag of potatoes that they are going to grow at home. Here’s what to do.
HOW TO GROW YOUR POTATOES IN A POT
  • Plant your potatoes after all danger of frost has passed. Fill a pot with 10 cm of moist soil or compost. Small potatoes can be planted as they are.
  • Plant the potatoes 15 cm apart and cover them with about 8cm of moist soil.
  • Cover the potatoes with more soil after they sprout stems and leaves and are about 18 cm tall.
  • Continue to cover the small plants until they reach the top of the pot. Your pot of potatoes should be kept well watered but not soggy.
  • You can harvest the potatoes after the plants flower and then turn yellow. This will be in about 12 weeks. You can also remove new potatoes before flowering. Once the stems turn yellow, stop watering and wait a week. Dig out the potatoes.
  • Clean the potatoes and enjoy some and bring the rest to sell at the Fair!

This week students planted the sunflower seeds we saved from the beautiful huge sunflowers we grew last year. Students also took some seeds home to plant.  We can’t wait to see Coleraine full of golden sunflowers next January.

This term, we’re asking all students to bring nude food every day for playlunch and lunch.  We’re aiming to be a zero waste school. There will be great prizes for students who bring food without plastic wraps every day this term.
