OUR NEW SUBPOD WORM COMPOSTING SYSTEM FOR OUR FOOD WASTE

27/8/2021

Last week the seniors set up and installed the SUBPOD with some worms.
This week Lacey, Zara, Ryan, Jasmine and Pheobe started feeding the worms with our fruit and food scraps.
They included some torn paper to add carbon to the food scraps and added the food scraps to both sides of the SUBPOD. Lacey then used the special mixing tool to make sure the scraps were mixed in well with the worms.
The worms will eat the food scraps and provide us with worm castings and compost that we can use in the veggie gardens to grow more food.

This week, students sorted and packaged the hundreds of lids and bread tags and pens and markers you’ve helped us to collect to go to Terracycle and Lids4Kids.   If you have collected lids and bread tags, pens and markers send them into school so we can sort them and send them off.

WE HAVE A NEW WORM COMPOSTING SYSTEM FOR OUR FOOD WASTE

Unfortunately we have had to say goodbye to our chooks and chook yard..
We don’t want to put our food waste into Landfill  and we were able to purchase a SUBPOD Worm Composting System to use our food scraps.
This week the seniors, did a fantastic job setting up and installing the SUBPOD with some worms into the Herb bed.  Next week we will be able to start feeding the worms with our fruit and food scraps.  The worms will eat the food scraps and will provide us with worm castings and compost that we can use in the veggie gardens to grow more food.

WE’RE STILL COLLECTING LIDS 4 KIDS and BREAD TAGS

We’re still collecting plastic lids and bread tags and pens, textas, highlighters and markers.
Over the next few weeks we will sort and package up what we’ve collected to go to Terracycle and Lids4Kids in the holidays. So bring in any lids and bread tags you have.

Our lids can be used for making new plastics that will be made into prosthetic limbs for needy children.
Our bread tags are bought by Transmutation in Robe who make amazing bowls and plates for Country Road and they sell online too.  The money they pay for the bread tags is used to purchase wheelchairs.  Over the last 2 years the bread tags collected have bought 20 wheelchairs.

A huge thanks to Hannah who has motivated community members to drop their lids into Barry at the Transfer Station.
Amazing work Hannah.

We’ll start collecting again in Term 4 so don’t stop collecting at home.
Let’s all make sure that plastic lids and bread tags and pens, textas and markers don't go into Landfill.

Refuse Plastic this August and Bring Nude Food

6/8/2021

Plastic Free July has finished but we all need to keep the good habits we started and kept up in Plastic Free July.

Some of the good habits are :
  • Refusing plastic bags
  • Taking reusable shopping bags
  • Taking reusable produce bags
  • Packing Nude Food lunches
  • Using wax wraps at home and for school lunches instead of plastic wrap.
  • Refusing to buy products with unnecessary plastic packaging.

We still have Produce Bags and Wax Wraps made by parents and students that you can purchase.  Wax wraps are 3 for $5 or $2 each. Produce bags are $2.  Bring your money in an envelope on Tuesdays and give it to Ms Cooney (just like Xavier did).. All money received goes to the Parents Association.

Every single action we do makes a difference and it's never too late to start.
