We’re hearing all about what students and families have growing in their gardens at home. The Patons are growing watermelons and have self sown pumpkins growing well.

For our Clean Up Schools Day on Wednesday 2 March we will have 3 clean up sessions during our Sustainability classes. If any parents want to assist after the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, the Clean up sessions will be:
LGB 9.50am - 10.30. LGA 11.20 - 12.10 pm LGC 12.10 - 1.00pm. Thanks to LGC our RSSS group for organising the gloves and bags for the day. Resourcesmart and Environment Education Victoria are having a competition where we get runs for each sustainable action we complete and put up on the RSSS portal. Our Sustainability leader Jack and our senior group are excited about some of the great prizes we can win for the school, including Bunnings vouchers and Insect Hotels.
Today, we made a great start to the competition with LGC updating our Daily Classroom Job Tasks and organising the gloves and bags we received from Clean Up Australia for our Clean Up Day next Wednesday 2 March. We’ve already made 16 runs in Week 1. Well done to our Sustainability leaders. Again this year, we will be collecting Lids for Kids, Bread Tags and Writing implements such as pens, markers, and textas, so they don’t end up in Landfill.
LIDS for KIDS Hannah has agreed to co-ordinate our collections again this year. She will be collecting milk and soft drink lids from the Transfer Station that have been collected by Barry and the community. Maddison is organising the collection of milk bottle tops from the Catching Pen.Last year, we sent the lids to Geelong where they will be melted down and made into prosthetic limbs for kids using a 3D printer. Last week, Olivia brought in clean lids she collected over the holidays to start our new collection. Well done Olivia. Lids must be clean and dry please, without the white plastic insert. See below the poster of the type of lids we collect and sort. BREAD TAGS If you buy the bread that still has plastic bread tags, don’t worry they can be recycled! We collect plastic bread tags and send them to Transmutation in Robe to be made into bowls and other fancy homewares. Bring them in so we can sort them and send them off when we have enough. PENS, TEXTAS AND MARKERS Last year we saved 2 boxes of pens and textas from Landfill and recycled them through TerraCycle. So whenever you have a clean out or your writing implements run out of ink, don’t throw them in the Landfill bin, bring them in to school, to the box in the Office. We get points and prizes from Terracycle for every box of pens we send back. Thanks everyone for doing your bit to save plastic from Landfill! This week LGB students planted Broad Beans, Sugar Snap Peas, Snow Peas, chive and coriander seeds so the seedlings will be ready to sell at the Twilight Fair.
They planted them in our Wicking Box which will ensure the seeds will stay moist while the seeds are germinating. The Wicking Box is made from recycled polystyrene box, seedling pots, shade cloth and a drink bottle. Students will make sure there is always enough water in the bottom of the box, the pots and shade cloth are a barrier between the water and the soil. The soil soaks up the water, so it's moist all the time. It’s a great way to germinate seeds that take a long time to germinate, such as leeks or coriander. It’s also an easy way for LGB to make sure the seeds they’ve planted don’t dry out. Austin is looking after the Wicking Box this week to make sure the water is topped up regularly. |
