We hope that seeing what the students do might inspire you to start growing the veggies you like at home.
This week we will be planting beans, snow peas, more carrots, and zucchinis.
GenR8Change (a Health support group who are making the healthier choice the easier choice for people living in the southern grampians, especially children) put out a great article to explain why growing your own food is so important. https://www.genr8change.com/
There are a multitude of reasons to start growing your own produce. Here are our top five:
HEALTHIER Growing your own organic produce will reduce exposure to chemicals typically used to prevent produce deterioration.
NUTRITIONAL The nutrient content of produce declines when stored over time. Seasonal and locally grown produce is fresher and more nutrient dense- helping to support healthy bodies
SUSTAINABLE Home-grown produce travels from your backyard to your kitchen. This eliminates packaging and reduces environmental burden from food transportation.
TASTIER Seasonally grown produce is typically fresher and tastes better- produce ripened on the vine or tree is harvested when ready to eat and at its best nutritionally.
FAMILY TIME Growing your own produce not only provides a relaxing family activity, it’s also a wonderful form of exercise. Harvesting produce from your own garden is also a fun way to encourage kids to try new foods.
Get outside and get your hands dirty this weekend!
